Air-to-Air Heat Exchangers for Electrical Enclosures and Control Panels

The air-to-air heat exchangers listed above cool electrical enclosures and control panels by transferring internal heat to outside ambient air in a fully sealed, closed-loop design. No refrigerant, no external water supply, and no moving parts in the heat transfer element: reliable, low-maintenance thermal management for cabinet cooling.

These Noren Industrial Thermal Management units use heat pipe technology: internal air circulates past the heat pipes, transfers its heat to a separate external airstream, and returns cooled, without the two airstreams ever mixing. That sealed separation keeps contaminants out of the cabinet, making air-to-air exchangers well suited to dusty, humid, or washdown environments. Units are available in NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X ratings.

Choose air-to-air when ambient temperature is lower than your desired internal temperature and cooling below ambient is not required. When sub-ambient cooling is needed, see the air-to-water heat exchangers or enclosure air conditioners.

Common Questions About Air-to-Air Heat Exchangers

Choose an air-to-air heat exchanger when the ambient temperature is lower than your desired internal cabinet temperature and cooling below ambient is not required. Heat exchangers have no refrigerant, no compressor, and minimal moving parts, so they cost less to install and maintain than air conditioners. If you need sub-ambient cooling, an air conditioner or air-to-water unit is required.

Both are sealed, closed-loop coolers with no refrigerant, but an air-to-air unit rejects enclosure heat into the surrounding ambient air, while an air-to-water unit rejects it into a cooling-water supply. Because water can carry away more heat, an air-to-water heat exchanger can hold the enclosure below ambient temperature, whereas an air-to-air unit can only cool toward ambient. Choose air-to-air when ambient air is cooler than your target and no water supply is available.

Yes, the closed-loop design keeps the internal enclosure environment completely sealed from the outside. NEMA 4X models also offer corrosion resistance for outdoor, chemical, or wash-down environments.

Pelmar Engineering carries Noren models certified for Class I Division 2 and ATEX/IECEx hazardous locations. Browse the Hazardous Location subcategory for certified units.

Provide your enclosure’s total internal heat load (BTU/H or watts), the maximum ambient temperature at the installation site, the maximum allowable internal temperature, and your enclosure dimensions. Pelmar Engineering’s team can assist with calculations.

Flush mount units are installed flat against the enclosure wall with minimal protrusion, suitable where space is limited. Pelmar Engineering also carries drop-in style units and other configurations; contact us if a specific mounting style is required.
